The Science Behind White Birch Toothpaste
A toothpaste born from a tree, shaped by patent.
Made from Japanese White Birch trees through the binchotan method — clinically proven to deliver 4–6 shades whiter teeth in 28 days, with a non-abrasive RDA of just 45.
It begins with a single tree.
The Japanese white birch (Betula platyphylla) grows in the cold mountain forests of northern Japan. For centuries, master craftsmen have prized its wood for one reason: purity. Its tight grain, low resin content, and clean burn make it the ideal raw material for the binchotan method — a Japanese tradition perfected over generations.

The binchotan method: an ancient Japanese craft.
The binchotan method is the Japanese art of transforming hardwood into its purest, most active form. Through slow, controlled firing at temperatures most ingredients never see, the wood is transformed into a fine, optically white powder — one of the most adsorbent, gentlest natural compounds known.
In Japan, the binchotan method has been used for purification for over three centuries: filtering water, purifying sake, restoring balance. White Birch is the first toothpaste to bring this tradition to modern dentistry.
Patented in 2020. Only White Birch.
White Birch’s chief chemist took the centuries-old binchotan method and adapted it for modern oral care — developing a proprietary high-temperature and oxidative process that produces an ultra-fine, optically white whitening powder, suitable for daily use.
The result is protected by United States Patent #10,653,596 (issued May 19, 2020) and exclusive to White Birch. No other toothpaste on the market can claim this material.
Technical detail: White Birch’s whitening powder is binchotan, shaped by the patented method described in US 10,653,596.
Clinically proven. Independently studied.
In a 28-day independent clinical study at PSC Research Institute, conducted under ADA guidelines for whitening toothpaste, White Birch was tested head-to-head against Colgate Optic White.
80% of users reported “significantly whiter” teeth after 14 days. No tooth sensitivity. No gum irritation. No adverse reactions.

50% gentler than the competition.
Most whitening toothpastes rely on harsh abrasives to scrape stains off your enamel. White Birch doesn’t. Our patented binchotan is milled to a particle size of less than 0.21 mm — fine enough to polish the tooth surface without scratching it — and suspended in a calcium carbonate base that further cushions the action.
The result is a Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) of just 45, independently tested. That’s 50% less abrasive than Colgate Optic White, and significantly gentler than Crest 3D White.
| Toothpaste | RDA | Abrasiveness |
|---|---|---|
| White Birch | 45 | Low — 50% less abrasive |
| Sensodyne Pronamel | ~35 | Low (slower whitening) |
| Crest 3D White | ~90 | Moderate |
| Colgate Optic White | 100 | Moderate |
The American Dental Association considers any toothpaste under RDA 250 safe. White Birch is five times gentler than the ADA’s safe-use ceiling.
