Is Charcoal Toothpaste Safe for Enamel? A Dentist Explains
Charcoal toothpaste has become one of the most recognizable trends in oral care. It is also one of the most misunderstood.
As a dentist, one of the questions I hear is simple: Is charcoal toothpaste safe for enamel?
The answer is more nuanced than a yes or no. Charcoal itself does not tell you how abrasive a toothpaste will be. What matters is the complete formulation, how the ingredient is processed, the other polishing ingredients in the paste, and the product’s measured abrasivity.
What actually makes a toothpaste abrasive?
Toothpaste needs some cleaning and polishing ability to help remove plaque and external stains. Abrasivity becomes a concern when a formulation is unnecessarily aggressive, particularly when used every day over long periods.
Dentistry uses a standardized measurement called Relative Dentin Abrasivity, or RDA, to compare toothpaste abrasivity under controlled conditions. The RDA value gives consumers and dental professionals more useful information than simply seeing the word “charcoal” on a label.
This is important because two charcoal toothpastes can behave very differently. The presence of charcoal alone does not determine the final RDA of the toothpaste.
Does charcoal toothpaste damage enamel?
A properly formulated charcoal toothpaste is not automatically damaging to enamel. The concern is that some charcoal products may rely heavily on mechanical scrubbing to remove surface stains.
That is why I recommend looking beyond marketing claims and asking a better question: How abrasive is the finished product, and how is it intended to be used?
A toothpaste intended for regular use should clean effectively without depending on excessive abrasion.
What does RDA mean in toothpaste?
RDA stands for Relative Dentin Abrasivity. It is a laboratory method used to measure the abrasive potential of a toothpaste relative to a standardized reference.
RDA is useful because it evaluates the finished formulation rather than making assumptions based on a single ingredient. A toothpaste containing charcoal can have a relatively modest RDA if the entire formula is designed appropriately.
Why White Birch has an RDA of 45

That number is important to me as a dentist because it allows us to combine stain-removing ingredients with a formulation designed for everyday brushing.

Does charcoal actually whiten teeth?
There is another important distinction: removing surface stains is not the same thing as bleaching the internal color of a tooth.
Charcoal may help adsorb or mechanically remove some external staining, but evidence does not establish charcoal toothpaste as superior to conventional whitening approaches. That is one reason I am cautious about products that imply charcoal alone can dramatically bleach teeth.

A well-designed tooth powder can be a useful supplemental stain-removal product when it is manufactured specifically for oral care and used according to its directions. As with toothpaste, consumers should choose a reputable product rather than assuming that every charcoal-based product is formulated the same way.
